Hot Spot – Bodega on Main

If you’ve done some travelling over the years, we’re sure you’ll agree that the first thing you’re struck by when entering Bodega on Main is how much it reminds you of those cozy restaurants and cafés throughout Spain and Europe. There’s an authentic feel about this place, whether it’s the comfy, ‘old-school’ booths, the inviting bar; the cool artwork which line the walls or even the perfect lighting. And then there’s the superb food. We chose the 3-6pm “happy hour” for our early week visit and the plan was to sample a variety of their happy hour Spanish tapas and a few shared items off the diverse menu. And, we’re happy to inform you their Spanish Wines and House Bodega Lager are part of the appeal of the happy hour menu!

Our selection included Patatas Bravas; Twice-fried potatoes in a “zesty sauce” but not too hot and Jamon Serrano; Bodega’s cured Spanish Ham with Olive Oil. From the regular menu one more shared item: several orders of some of the best meatballs we’ve ever had; served with just the right amount of tomato sauce and grated Manchego, one of the healthiest of cheeses. We finished up with a glass of Red Wine from their regular list, choosing a very reasonably priced Hacienda Lopez De Haro “Reserve” from the Rioja region and a Café Madrid – Spanish coffee with Orange and Coffee liqueur and Torres 5 Brandy. Bodega on Main offers Saturday and Sunday Brunch.

Hot Sound – The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

Though widely-acknowledged today as one of the seminal albums of all-time, ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ was not loved by all upon its debut in 1967. In fact, the New York Times went so far as to not only pan it; but referred to it as “busy, hip and cluttered”.

Now on the 50th Anniversary of this legendary recording, The Beatles classic is re-mastered and offered in several brand new configurations; the first ever concept album and the first ever multi-format reissue of a Beatles studio album.

This two CD set – the first ever remix of a Beatles album – includes remixes of ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Penny Lane’ which were released as a double A side single in 1967 but not included on the original record.

Hot Doc – The Wrecking Crew

Throughout the sixties and into the seventies a group of Los Angeles-based studio musicians provided the music to some of the biggest hits from many of music’s biggest stars; from Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Herb Alpert and Elvis Presley to Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher, The Monkees and The Byrds. These creative and talented artists – unsung heroes, really – were known as ‘The Wrecking Crew’. Among them: guitarist named Tommy Tedesco. His son Denny is the force behind this fantastic documentary; a long, overdue acknowledgment to these musicians and a loving tribute to a father from his son.

Music fans who have enjoyed other well-made documentaries like ‘Muscle Shoals’ or ‘20 Feet from Stardom’ won’t want to miss “The Wrecking Crew” available through the usual online outlets and, if you go to www.wreckingcrewfilm.com Denny Tedesco will give you a discount if you use the codeword “Canada” on a variety of items including the DVD, the soundtrack and a very cool and detailed companion book; ‘Sound Explosion: Inside LA’s Studio Factory with the Wrecking Crew’ by Ken Sharp
