VANCOUVER, January 17, 2019 – The Vancouver Just For Laughs Film Festival is proudly returning for its second year as part of JFL NorthWest, Vancouver’s Just For Laughs Festival, taking over theatres and venues across the city from February 14-23, 2019. This year’s Festival will continue to build on the foundation laid by last year’s inaugural fest by hosting elite screenings of some of today’s top indie films and welcoming leaders in the comedy film industry as guest speakers.

Over the span of 6 days, the Vancouver Just for Laughs Film Festival will be the center for all things comedy in film, featuring panels and conversations with esteemed industry tastemakers, seasoned and first-time filmmakers, and additional special guests. This year’s festival will include three Special Presentations, including two up close & personal In Conversation events, and more.

MEET THE STARS 

KICKING BACK WITH SETH ROGEN AND EVAN GOLDBERG
Hometown heroes and beloved comedy duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg return to Vancouver for an intimate in-conversation event and retrospective look at their greatest work. Responsible for some of our favorite and most outrageous comedies, including Superbad, Pineapple Express, The Interview, This is The End, 50/50, and Sausage Party, the filmmaking dream team have become two of the most elite names in comedy. Don’t miss the chance to kick back with Seth and Evan as they discuss their impressive career, share some of their highlights and give us a glimpse of what’s coming next!

IN CONVERSATION WITH KEN JEONG

Actor, producer, writer and performer Ken Jeong, known for his scene stealing abilities, has established himself as one of today’s top comedic stars, and we’re giving you a chance to get up-close and personal with the hilarious comedian! Known for his roles as “Mr. Chow” in The Hangover, “Wye Mun Goh” in Crazy Rich Asians, “Ben Chang” in Community, or his leading role in Dr. Ken, Jeong’s impressive credits has made him one of our favourite comedic stars!

THE GENTLEMEN HECKLERS

Eric Fell, Gina Harms, Patrick Maliha, and K.C Novak are Vancouver’s masters of movie riffing, making ‘so-bad-they’re-good’ movies even better by talking you through them. Over the past six years, The Gentlemen Hecklers have built up a loyal cult following in Vancouver and this time, their subject is the 2004 Ryan Gosling classic “The Notebook,” just in time for Valentine’s Day! The Gentlemen Hecklers will be performing on Wednesday, February 13 2019, 9:00 pm PT at Rio.

SHORT FILM COMPETITIONS

After a successful launch last winter, the Vancouver Just For Laughs Film Festival is excited to host two short film competitions honouring the art of short format storytelling, both across British Columbia and beyond.

In both the Comedy Short Shorts and World-Wide Shorts competitions, the top three films will be voted on by a jury of industry judges, with the first-place winners from each showcase taking home a $1000 CAD cash prize. The top films in each category will then go head-to-head for the grand prize: a coveted screening slot at the internationally renowned Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal this upcoming July.

The World-Wide Shorts Showcase

You know what they say – the world is a funny place! With submissions coming in from across the globe, this showcase is composed of some of the world’s greatest comedic shorts, which will screen on Sunday, February 17 2019, 4:00pm PT at Vancity Theatre prior to The Comedy Short Shorts showcase.

It Starts With the Script: A Comedy Screenwriters Panel

We’re also excited to introduce a new partnership this year with Jeremy Garelick’s American High. Influenced by movies like Ferris BuellerSixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, Garelick BOUGHT a school with the aim to make more movies like the ones that inspired him as a teen. In its first year, his company has already shot five indie comedies in his newly acquired school-turned-studio in Syracuse, NY.

The Comedy Pitch Showcase Presented by American High
