If you are anything like the staff at Metro Living Zine, you love fashion and a great deal. Twice a year, Winners has their Runway Event, which only happens in their stores featuring a “runway section”. The event has been slowly evolving over the past five years. Several years ago, crowd-weary, savvy shoppers were able to visit their local Winners Runway department on the evening before the event to snap up their purchases. This is no longer possible. Now, the staff put out the merchandise after the stores have closed on the night before the event.

On the morning of the Runway event, the stores open early at 8:00 AM. They will customarily set out Tim Hortons coffee and Tim Bits for shoppers inside the stores after they have officially opened for business that day. The sweets and coffee are rarely touched.

There has been an increase in so-called “purse pandemonium”. It has now become customary for a small group of exceptionally aggressive shoppers to crowd the front entrance of the stores and pounce on the heavily logo-ed designer purses. It should be expected that almost all of them will be cleared out of the Runway stores by 11:00 am on the first day of the event. Thankfully, this type of consumer behaviour is normally only seen in the handbag department.

The Fashion Week Runway Event usually happens either on the last week of August or the first week of September. The SS Runway Event generally occurs mid February or early April. In the past, there have been labels such as Balenciaga, Chloe, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Lanvin, Pucci, Prada, Miu Miu, Pink Tartan and Missoni. In spite of the increasingly aggressive nature of the shoppers attending this event, we still recommend it; even if it’s only for the sublime pleasure of observing fashion bargain hunters in their natural habitat.
