One MLZ Staffer Reminisces: 1988-1989 White Guess Jeans & ‘It Takes Two’ by Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock

I remember being in Grade 9, sporadically attending class at Alpha Secondary School in Burnaby, BC, and feeling like the “Cats Meow” after returning from a cross-border shopping trip with my mom triumphantly in possession of a pair of white Guess jeans and the cassette tape with the explicit lyrics of ‘It Takes Two’ by Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock which was released in 1988.

Backgrounder: Claudia Schiffer starred in the Guess Jeans campaign series of black and white ads that ran between 1989-1990. Ellen Von Unwerth, photographed this image of Claudia in her bustier in 1989. This photo has become one of the most iconic pieces of fashion advertising history. Guess jeans were not available in Canada in 1989 so it was a huge fashion coup to be in possession of a pair of white Guess jeans with the coveted red triangle on the back pocket. It was also considered de riguer “back in the day” to be in possession of hip-hop cassette tapes with explicit lyrics which could only be readily obtained “across-the-line”.
